Character: Wave
Age: 20
Canon: Akame ga Kill!
Canon Point: Manga Chapter 50
Background: Here
Personality:
Wave is a rather straightforward fellow. He is earnest, well-meaning, and mentally resilient, though these positive traits are also reflective of his flaws. Wave grew up in a rural village on the coast, and in Akame ga Kill, there is a substantial dichotomy between people who were raised in country versus those brought up in the Empire’s much more highly populated, shady and corrupt capital where a lot of the narrative takes place. The differences are basically what you’d expect: the rural folks are generally characterized to be more naïve and pure of heart, whereas people who live in and around the Capital are more jaded, suspicious and cynical. Wave is no exception to this.
Loyalty is a definitive facet of Wave’s personality. Few specifics have been revealed regarding his background, but we are told that he joined the imperial navy after being influenced by a “certain man.” One suspects that this man is or was a higher ranking member of the navy who earned Wave’s loyalty, likely by saving his life or doing a great service to him, his family, or his village. Either way, this man had a big impact on Wave’s life, and in large part because of him, Wave has great pride in fighting for the empire, specifically as a member of its navy. Beyond this one example, as he spends time with them, Wave shows increasingly strong loyalty towards his teammates, the other members of Jaegers — particularly Bols, Run, and Kurome. However, because of this, Wave has a tendency to overlook the many negative aspects of the Empire he serves, often focusing instead on the well-being of his friends rather than paying heed to the larger picture.
Wave is the type to wear his emotions on his sleeve. When he witnesses injustice happening in front of him, he has a tough time sitting back and keeping his mouth shut. He is also very expressive and prone to exaggerated reactions. This is initially showcased when he meets the other Jaegers for first time; for each strange appearance or behavior, he has a lot of trouble concealing his apprehension or shock. Later in the scene, his general lack of awareness is also revealed, as he fares poorly during a surprise attack that General Esdeath launches in order to test her new subordinates. This weakness is later exploited by his enemies, too; on two separate occasions they are able to remove Wave from a fight by catching him off guard. Tatsumi, as a pseudo prisoner, is also able to escape while Wave is supposed to be watching over him.
Despite these repeated failures, though, Wave tends to stay optimistic and confident in his abilities, and he doesn’t beat himself up over his mistakes for too long. He remains a tough, brave guy who is willing to put himself in the line of fire without hesitation when called upon. Though he doesn’t have much competition, Wave is one of the more chivalrous male characters in the series. As mentioned above, he is always motivated to stand up against injustice, and he’s shown to be quite empathetic. (There’s a running gag where Wave notices one of his allies feeling down, and he psyches himself up to help make them feel better, only to miss the opportunity in the end for various reasons.)
The time Wave spent living in a small fishing village is reflective in his interests and habits. Seafood is his favorite, and for his first meeting with the Jaegers his mother saddled him with a sack of it for him to share with his new teammates (though later it’s revealed that he’s not an ace at cooking it, as Bols has to give him a few pointers). Wave’s preferred type of tea is also seaweed.
Abilities:
Wave is a very capable fighter, specifically hand-to-hand. He also owns a special weapon, called a Teigu, to aid him in combat. Its capabilities are listed here. Somewhat ironically, Wave is never shown swimming or sailing on page, but it's assumed he can do both quite well.
